The Power of Short Form Video (Instagram Reels)

By now we’ve all experienced short form video, whether it’s on Instagram reels or Tiktok, and have a base understanding of what it is: 15-60 second videos designed to capture the attention of the audience with music, visuals or narratives. But did you know it’s also a powerful tool in the hands of a small business?

Understanding How Reels Work

“Reels are designed to entertain you” (Instagram, 2021), after so much confusion on how reels end up on any given page and what the algorithm is for deciding that, Instagram has given us some insight on what it’s based on:

  • Interaction with similar accounts on Instagram
  • History of interacting with the creator
  • “Popularity” of the person posting

They also say they do have an “eye” towards smaller creators, meaning they do push smaller accounts based on the first two points. 

Small Accounts Who Have Seen Success from Reels

We’ve included different accounts from different industries that have under 400 followers (at the time of creation) that all saw in increased audience just by posting on reels

LMMA most notably saw over 10 thousand views on 1 reel!

What Should You Do

Create Create Create. Being consistent only helps broaden your audience!

However, here are some things you should avoid, according to the algorithm:

  • Low resolution videos
  • Watermarked videos (make sure the titktok watermark is gone before you put it on reels!)
  • And Political videos

“We also avoid recommending reels for other reasons, such as low-resolution or watermarked reels, or reels that focus on political issues or that are made by political figures, parties, or government officials – or on their behalf.”

(Instagram, 2020)
